BALKAN CAMP 2010 - ROMANIA
The Romanian Speleological Federation with the support of the Balkan Speleological Union organizes the 4th edition of Balkan Cavers Camp between 15th -18th July 2010 in Padis – Natural Park Apuseni,
Bihor Mountains, administrative jurisdiction of Pietroasa village, Bihor County.
During the Balkan Camp there will also take place an International Cave Rescue Excercise at Cetăţile Ponorului Cave on 17th July 2010. Details about this exercise are included.


Arrival: 14 July 2010 Location: Padis Plateau, Bihor County – Natural Park Apuseni GPS Coordinates: N 46,596087; E 22,734775
ACCESS Distances from main access routes: - approx. 530 km from Bucharest (South), 250 km from Timisoara (South-West), 150 km from Cluj-Napoca (North-East), 120 km from Oradea (West)
If you come by train or by plane and you need transportation to the Balkan Camp location please let us know by 11 July 2010. Be aware that there is no public transportation (bus or train) available to Padis.
PROGRAM
15th July – Thursday
- participants arrival
- 17.00 - 20.00 - BSU Round table for the problems of Cave protection in Balkans; Chairman - Veslin Drobenov - President of BSU Commission of Cave Protection
- 20:00 official opening
16th July - Friday
A. Tour by car (transportation will be with personal cars; distance: 250km, duration: 10h; lunch will be taken on the route)
a. sight-seeing tour in the city of Oradea and bathing in Baile Felix Resort (a well-known thermal water resort in Romania)
b. visit to the Bears Cave (no caving equipment necessary)
B. Backpacking – Padis - The Lost World
- duration: 5 hours
- necessary equipment: mountain boots, polar jacket, rain jacket, packed water and food (sandwiches)
- a tour guide is provided
C. Visit to low difficulty caves: minimum 5 hours
- the caves are located in Padis, however transportation from camp site to the caves by own personal cars is necessary
- necessary equipment: cave overall, boots, helmet and headlamp
- a caving guide is provided
D. Visit to medium difficulty caves caves (caves with verticals)
- duration: 8-10 hours
- necessary equipment: cave overall, boots, helmet and headlamp, complete vertical caving equipment (DED method equipment)
- all participants to this caving tour MUST have rope autonomy (can descend/ ascend on a rope by themselves)
- for caves with watercourses a 5mm neoprene is required
- participation fee: ~ 10-12 Euro/person
- collective equipment (ropes, anchors, etc.) and caving guides are provided
17th July - Saturday
A. 9.00 - 11.00 Meeting of Bureau of Balkan Speleological Union
B. 13.30 - GAM of Balkan Speleological Union
C. International Cave Rescue Exercise - Cetăţile Ponorului Cave (details below)

Guesthouse “La butoaie” –15 Euro/room; rooms are with 2 and 3 beds Camping houses: 15Euro/house; houses with 2 beds Camping – free of charge

Meals
- Self-catering (don’t forget to bring a gas stove with you)
- The guesthouse can provide meals at the following prices: ~2 Euro / breakfast; 7-10 Euro/ lunch; 5-7 Euro/ dinner

International Cave Rescue Exercise - Cetăţile Ponorului Cave
16-17 July 2010
Period: 16th July arrival of participants, 17th July cave rescue operations Location: Cetaţile Ponorului Cave - Padiş, Bihor Mountains Organizer: CORSA (Romanian Cave Rescue Association), Bihor Mountain & Cave Rescue Service, Speodava Ştei Speleology Club, General Commandment for Emergency Situations Bihor ( IGSU ), Mobile Service of Resuscitation and Rescue Bihor (SMURD). Coordinators: Rus Tudor, Kondacs Adrian, Vodă Călin, Col. Bratu Claudiu.
Cave Description: Cetăţile Ponorului Cave is located in Bihor Mountains (administrative jurisdiction of Pietroasa village - Bihor County) and it’s one of the most representative karstic processes in Romania. The cave entrance has an opening of 76 meters height. It is an active cave with 3800 m length of galleries and a total denivelation of 201 meters. The cave has 14 lakes, from which the largest has a length of 80 meters. Cave coordinates: N46 º 33’ 50’’ and E 22º 42’ 11’’
Access: - same access routes as for Balkan Camp; - once you reach Padis continue on the main road on the Padis Plateau and it will take you to Cetăţile Ponorului Guesthouse; from Cetăţile Ponorului Guesthouse there is a marked trail approx. 1km long to Cetăţile Ponorului Cave. - the distance between Balkan Camp and Cetăţile Ponorului Guesthouse where the operations command center will be is of 12 km on road or 1,5h on marked trail
Accommodation: - Balkan Camp accommodation in Padiş - Cetăţile Ponorului Guesthouse. - the Command Center will be located at Cetăţile Ponorului Guesthouse. The distance between Balkan Camp and Cetăţile Ponorului Guesthouse is of 12 km on road or 1,5h on marked trail. It is also possible to camp for free at Căput/Glavoi Glade.
Accommodation Expenses: - Cetăţile Ponorului Guesthouse is 40 RON (10 euro) /night. - Camping at Caput / Glavoi Glade – free Parking Place: At Cetăţile Ponorului Guesthouse Meal: Self catering
Participation Conditions: - participants should have completed an advanced training in caving techniques or a cave rescue training - participants with a basic caving techniques training will be in charge of the Command Point and will coordinate the outside operations - participation is free of charge Minimum Necessary Equipment: Sleeping bag and a tent for those who will stay in Balkan Camp or will be camping at Căput/Glavoi Glade. Individual Caving Equipment: Complete vertical caving equipment, complete neoprene costume for those participating in the cave rescue operations (see above for conditions)
