Prokletije – Bjeshket e Namuna 2008
During summer 2008 (19/07-10/08) the third exploratory expedition in the Prokletije Mts. (close to the border between Albania and Montenegro) took place. Some reconnaissance had been done in the winter conditions during May 2008.
The main object of our interest was the Belič massif divided due to morphology into 4 meridional zones.
The massif covers an area of about 80 km2 cut by valleys: Ljugu i Belicit and Ljugu i Preslopit. It is bounded by a few big glacial valleys: Ropojana with the Savino Oko karst spring to the west; Zarunica to the north (formed along the border between carbonate and clastic formations); Proni i Cerimit to the east; and Valbona to the south. The exploration has been conducted from the western to the eastern parts of the massif.
First rainy week of expedition was spent on transporting, going through formalities connected with activity in a frontier zone, meeting local officials and setting up the upper base camps (there were two: first in the exploratory zone I and second – in the zone II, at 2000 and 1900 m a.s.l. respectively, with the distance of about 1h walk from each other). Therefore it was possible to explore much more extensive area.
Because of the lack of surface snow, we had to draw it using ropes from a nearby karst well.
At the expedition 26 caves were explored, most of them of a few-tens-of-meters-deep without any further continuation. The deepest ones are: Cave to Savino Oko - 03 006 (-265 m), Ice Dragon Cave - 03 003 (-186 m), Infernal Gate - 03 066 (-101 m). The exploratory works in a few caves have not been finished yet.
The superficial exploration has also been done. We found several entrances that need to be checked next year.
Some reconnaissance has been made into following parts of the areas III and IV of Belič massif:
- extensive lapiez situated in the hanging valley on the Albanian side, dipping in the direction of Ljugu i Preslopit valley (2 entrances found);
- valley on the northern slope of Maja Kalata Mt. (3 entrances and great possibility of further exploration);
- lapiez situated to the N and NE of the peaks: Maja Kalata and Maja e Koljats, on the Albanian side (3 entrances).
The exploratory works were made in consultation with the Speleological Federation of Montenegro and the local officials. We also contacted the Albanian Geological Survey.
